The competition data lab

Every grappler, on one chart.

1,840 fighters · 68,904 matches · 15,402 submissions. Pick any two stats, search a name, and see how the greats actually compare.

Each dot is a fighter — hover for stats, click to open their profile. Bigger dots have more matches on record. Log scales tame the long tail (a few fighters dwarf the rest).

What the record throws away

Every grappling database records what finished a match. None of them record what was tried. A fighter can hunt four submissions, get swept twice, and win on points — and the record shows one line with none of it. We're mining the commentary of every match we have film for and logging the attempts themselves.

Scope and honesty: this covers only the 13 bouts we currently have film for, not the 1,840 fighters plotted above — it grows as more matches get analyzed. It's derived from what commentators said out loud, so it's a floor rather than a census: a silent attempt goes unrecorded. Research-grade, not an official record.

Which techniques actually convert

Every attempt, grouped by technique, with how often it ended the exchange. Sorted by how often it's tried rather than by success rate — at these sample sizes a lone successful attempt would otherwise sit at the top on a meaningless 100%.

Submissions

  • Heel hook 1/10 10%
  • Rear naked choke 2/8 25%
  • Arm triangle / kata gatame 0/7 0%
  • Armbar 2/6 33%
  • Guillotine 1/5 20%
  • Kimura 0/5 0%
  • Calf slicer / bear trap 0/4 0%
  • Leg entanglement (unspecified) 0/4 0%
  • Triangle choke 2/2 100%
  • Wrist lock 0/2 0%

Takedowns & positions

  • Back take 0/6 0%
  • Guard pass 1/5 20%
  • Mount 2/5 40%
  • Single leg 2/5 40%
  • Sweep / reversal 4/5 80%
  • Takedown (unspecified) 2/4 50%
  • Arm drag 1/3 33%
  • Ankle pick 1/2 50%
  • Trip 2/2 100%
  • Wrestle-up 0/2 0%

Tried repeatedly, never converted

Techniques attempted at least twice across the index with zero finishes. This is the clearest thing a win/loss record can't tell you — a fighter's habits that aren't paying off.

  • Arm triangle / kata gatame 0/7
  • Back take 0/6
  • Kimura 0/5
  • Calf slicer / bear trap 0/4
  • Leg entanglement (unspecified) 0/4
  • Wrestle-up 0/2
  • Wrist lock 0/2

How these are counted: technique names are canonicalized before grouping, so "kimura", "kimura from top" and "kimura trap" count as one technique. Rows describing a fighter defending (11 of them) are excluded from attempt counts rather than recorded as failures. Success means the attempt ended the exchange — a submission finished or a takedown landed. Sample sizes are small: rates on fewer than 2 attempts are shown as a raw count instead of a percentage.
